Pearson Assessments Instruments Help Prevent Adolescent Suicide
Early Identification of Risk Factors Can Save Lives
January 5, 2000, MINNEAPOLIS—According
to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, between 1952 and 1996 the
reported rates of suicide among adolescents and young adults nearly tripled.
Suicide is now the third leading cause of death for young people 15–24
years old, exceeded only by unintentional injury and homicide. The staggering
numbers have led to a Surgeon
General Call to Action to Prevent Suicide and NCS supports their
three-fold approach for addressing this escalating problem:
- Awareness,
- Intervention, and
- Methodology
Research indicates that some adolescents are particularly vulnerable to suicide and suicidal self-injury because they have more than one mental health issue present, such as depression and alcohol or substance abuse. They may also be very impulsive and/or aggressive and use highly lethal methods to attempt suicide. These risk factors can be identified and the appropriate intervention can be taken following the use of these specific Pearson Assessments:
- MMPI-A (Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory-Adolescent)—Helps identify adolescent problem areas and appropriate treatment strategies early in the assessment process. It takes 45-60 minutes to complete, with scales created specifically for the adolescent version of the MMPI® test, so they address issues such as family problems, eating disorders and chemical dependency.
- ISO-30 (Inventory of Suicidal Orientation-30)—Based on measurements of both hopelessness and suicide it helps identify adolescents at risk for attempting suicide. It takes 10 minutes to complete.
- MACI (Millon Adolescent Clinical Inventory)—Used to evaluate troubled adolescents by assessing their personality along with self-reported concerns and clinical symptoms. The test is short and takes 30 minutes to complete. Clinical symptoms include a scale for suicidal tendency, as well as information on areas that might lead to suicide such as eating dysfunction, substance abuse proneness, anxious feelings and depressive affect.
These adolescent-specific products help improve the ability for all health, mental health, substance abuse and human service professionals (including clergy, teachers, and correctional workers) to recognize and treat depression, substance abuse, and other medical illness associated with suicide risk.
