Test Author Achilles Bardos, PhD, to Present at National Symposium on Correctional Mental Health

Speaker to address achievement and cognitive skills screening appropriate for prison populations

February 25, 2004, MINNEAPOLIS—Achilles Bardos, PhD, will present a workshop on tests of basic achievement and cognitive skills that are appropriate for use in correctional settings at the 2004 Symposium of Mental Health in Corrections (MHCC). The Symposium will take place April 19-21 in Kansas City. Bardos’ one-hour workshop, entitled “Effective Evaluation of Cognitive and Achievement Skills in Corrections,” is scheduled for Tuesday, April 20 at 11:10 a.m.

Referencing case studies in which the GAMA® (General Ability Measure for Adults) test and the soon-to-be-released BASI™ (Basic Achievement Skills Inventory) test were used, Bardos will instruct participants how to administer and interpret the tests, and how to apply the findings, using validity evidence available with both correction samples and the general population.

The GAMA test is a brief, nonverbal instrument that can be administered in group settings. It provides an estimate of an individual’s general intellectual ability.

The BASI test is a series of multi-level, norm-referenced achievement tests that measure verbal and math skills and can be group- or self-administered.

Symposium attendees may visit the Pearson Assessments table at the conference to learn more about the GAMA or BASI instruments, or call Pearson Assessments at (800) 627-7271, ext.3291. Online resources are available at http://www.pearsonassessments.com

A not-for-profit organization, the MHCC’s primary goal is to provide focused training on topics related to substance abuse and mental health issues relevant to correctional professionals and inmate populations.
