New Speech and Language Assessment First to Measure Impact of Stuttering on a Person’s Daily Life
OASES Joins Pearson’s Comprehensive Offering of Speech and Language Assessments
BLOOMINGTON, Minn. – March 25, 2008 – Pearson today announced the first commercially available speech and language assessment designed to measure the broad impact of stuttering on a person’s life. Developed for use with adults 18 and older, the OASES (Overall Assessment of the Speaker’s Experience of Stuttering) is a brief, comprehensive assessment tool that speech and language professionals can use to support the need for treatment, plan effective interventions and measure progress in stuttering therapy.
A theory-driven assessment tool, OASES was developed based on the World Health Organization’s International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health. As a result, it assesses not only the symptoms of stuttering, but also the impact on a person’s ability to perform daily activities and participate fully in life.
Easily administered in fewer than 20 minutes, the OASES helps evaluate speakers’ perceptions about their stuttering, their reactions to stuttering and the difficulties they may encounter in daily life as a result of stuttering. Developed by Drs. J. Scott Yaruss and Robert Quesal, the OASES is designed to examine functional communication difficulties and quality of life for adults who stutter.
“The OASES is a unique assessment because it allows speech and language professionals to holistically examine the impact that stuttering has on their clients’ personal, educational and work lives and use those insights to plan and track successful intervention,” said Carol Watson, president, clinical assessment/North America, Pearson. “Then the client and clinician can work together to develop an appropriate therapy plan.”
The OASES can be administered on paper in English or Spanish, or speech and language professionals can ask clients to complete the questionnaire on the computer using Pearson’s Q Local software, which includes access to profile and progress reporting as well as interpretive reports with unique, score-driven text written by the authors. The assessment results are then used as a guide to discuss and plan specific treatment goals, including clients and even family members in the conversation. In addition, the OASES offers a convenient tool for monitoring client progress and evaluating treatment outcomes.
