New Bariatric Surgical Normative Data Significantly Enhance Psychological Assessment

Pearson Assessments has added bariatric norms to its MBMD™ test, offering psychologists a tool to provide more accurate evaluations

June 28, 2006, Bloomington, MN – Pearson Assessments announces an important enhancement to its MBMD™ (Millon™ Behavioral Medicine Diagnostic) test: a norm group comprised of bariatric surgery candidates. Psychologists nationwide already incorporate the MBMD test in their bariatric presurgical evaluations. The new bariatric norms will allow for even greater accuracy in those evaluations.

About the MBMD Test

The MBMD test is a self-report survey that yields data such as how the person is likely to respond in a stressful situation, the internal strengths and support the person can call upon, as well as areas where the person likely needs additional education or psychological counseling.

The MBMD test can help psychologists determine a candidate’s psychological suitability for surgery, assist patients in making significant lifestyle changes, and prepare medical staff to respond to patients’ likely reactions following surgery.

About the Bariatric Norms

The new MBMD bariatric norms now allow psychologists to compare their bariatric surgery clients to a large group of bariatric surgery patients, rather than other medical populations and the general population. This will enable the psychologists to write evaluations with greater accuracy.

The bariatric norms are based on data collected from more than 700 prescreened bariatric surgery patients from major clinics such as the WISH (Weight Intervention and Surgical Healthcare) Centers of Ariz., Fla., Ill., Texas, Utah, and Wash. The group includes more than 500 females and 100+ males, 20 to 70 years old, with BMIs (Body Mass Index) ranging from 30 to 85. Pearson Assessments and PsyKare, an independent contractor providing psychological services to the WISH Centers, carried out these investigations. The research outcomes furnish both male and female bariatric profiles.
