SCL-90-R® Instrument Screens Patients for Psychological Distress

September 27, 1999, MINNEAPOLIS—Early descriptions of mental illness symptoms can be traced back to the writings of Galen more than eighteen hundred years ago, and consisted of only the most conspicuous and overt behavior of a patient. Nowadays, the SCL-90-R® (Symptom Checklist-90-R) instrument from NCS helps medical practitioners objectively screen patients for a broad range of psychological problems and symptoms, measure the individual patient's progress, and measure outcomes in aggregate.

Psychological Symptoms the Test Helps Identify

The nine psychological symptoms the SCL-90-R instrument helps identify include:

  • somatization
  • obsessive-compulsive
  • interpersonal sensitivity
  • depression
  • anxiety
  • hostility
  • phobic anxiety
  • paranoid ideation
  • psychoticism

For years pharmaceutical companies and medical device manufacturers have turned to this instrument during medical trials, in order to help measure changes in patients' psychological symptoms over time. This form of outcome measurement plays an important role in a patient's quality of life, in addition to supporting mental health, medical and educational research objectives.

Features

The SCL-90R instrument features:

  • Nine primary symptom dimensions that provide an overview of a patient's symptoms and their intensity at a specific point in time. These measurements help facilitate treatment dimensions and identify problems before they become acute.

  • Easy administration. The test takes 12–15 minutes to complete, which makes it ideal for measuring symptom changes throughout treatment.

  • Graphically displays patient progress for up to five previous administrations.
