NCS Announces New MMPI-2™ Criminal Justice and
Corrections Report

November 10, 1999, MINNEAPOLIS—Traditionally, the MMPI® test has been one of the most widely used methods of classifying criminal offenders. However, in January 2000 NCS will introduce a new instrument that can help make intake, probation and parole decisions faster and more accurate than ever before-the MMPI-2 Criminal Justice and Corrections Report.

Reduce Potential Risks

Designed specifically for use in prisons and courts, this instrument provides personality and behavior information that can help criminal justice and correction personnel cost-effectively classify and place adult male offenders. It can also increase the effectiveness of programs, and reduce potential risks to other prisoners, guards, the general public, and the prisoner himself.

Correctional psychologists, classification officers, caseworkers, probation officers, judges, public defenders and other criminal justice professionals can use the information to help them determine:

  • Diversion vs. prosecution
  • Probation vs. incarceration
  • Security level
  • Risk and needs assessment
  • Treatment requirements

New Report Based on Megargee's Research

The new report features inmate ratings on nine relevant behavioral dimensions and problem areas based on the latest MMPI-2 research conducted by Edwin I. Megargee, a professor at Florida State University. Megargee is a pioneer in the modern psychological investigation of violent and aggressive behavior. In the 1970s he created the Megargee Offender Classification System, which describes the likely behavior of 10 types of offenders and suggests strategies for management and treatment. It has been reported to effectively classify 85% to 95% of the profiles encountered in most probation, parole and correctional settings, and the results can provide the empirical basis for actionable, defensible and cost-effective decisions throughout the criminal justice system.
