University of Minnesota Press & Pearson Assessments Announce Newest Update to the MMPI-2™ Revised Personnel System

Third edition offers applicant comparisons for six specific public safety occupations

December 31, 2001, MINNEAPOLIS, MN—Now consulting psychologists and hiring decision-makers have access to an even more powerful tool to help evaluate candidates for positions involving the safety of the public. Today the University of Minnesota Press and Pearson Assessments released the MMPI-2 Revised Personnel System, 3rd Edition. Based on the MMPI-2 test, the most widely researched psychological assessment used for employee screening, the updated reports provide data that are even more targeted to high-stress, safety-sensitive positions.

Public Safety Settings

The Revised Personnel System, 3rd Edition provides reports tailored to positions in six public safety settings:

  • nuclear power plant operators
  • law enforcement officers
  • airline pilots
  • firefighters and paramedics
  • seminary students
  • medical and graduate-level psychology students

Psychologists can use these reports to help identify individuals who may be emotionally unsuited for these demanding public safety roles. The system indicates personality attributes that may contribute to unsafe, irresponsible or ineffective on-the-job behavior.

Two Reports Available

Based on data from more than 18,000 personnel cases, both the Personnel Interpretive and Adjustment Rating Reports have been updated with two new sets of occupation-specific mean profiles on the validity, clinical, content and supplementary scales. These profiles help compare the applicant to other applicants in each of the six different public safety occupational areas, as well as to the general applicant sample.

"With the occupation-specific comparison group, I find the new mean profiles helpful and valuable," says Gary Farkas, PhD, a private practitioner whose practice includes screening candidates for law enforcement.

Developed by noted MMPI-2 test expert, James N. Butcher, PhD, the comprehensive interpretive report is tailored to each occupation to address the questions most relevant in employee selection. The expanded personnel interpretive report includes a new narrative section with contemporary personnel base rate information, which provides updated profile frequency data to complement the new mean profiles.

Updated User's Guide Provides Additional Help

The User's Guide was also updated to reflect changes to the reports. It provides interpretive guidelines for all of the MMPI-2 scales and the special features included in the revised reports. Additionally, it addresses key issues about using the MMPI-2 test for personnel selection, such as how to choose the appropriate test and how to administer the test effectively. It also includes detailed information on the development of the norms and the mean profiles.
