TELD-3 (Test of Early Language Development - 3rd Edition)

Authors: Wayne P. Hresko, D. Kim Reid, and Donald D. Hammill

Assess receptive and expressive early language abilities in children.

The TELD-3 offers an effective screener to help identify children who are experiencing language delays or difficulties and may be candidates for early intervention. In addition to an overall Spoken Language score, the TELD-3 yields scores for Receptive Language and Expressive Language subtests to enable finer discrimination in evaluating results. The detailed information provided by the TELD-3 can help clinicians develop appropriate intervention plans and identify children who may require more extensive clinical appraisal. This brief test also is well-suited for monitoring progress over time.

How to Use This Test

The TELD-3 is used by speech-language clinicians, early childhood educators, teachers, and administrators to help:

  • Identify children who are experiencing language problems that may require early intervention
  • Detect differences between a student's receptive and expressive language abilities, which is critical in designing appropriate early intervention plans
  • Gain insight into a child's abilities in a variety of specific linguistic areas, such as semantic or syntactic ability
  • Evaluate and document a student's progress through repeat administrations
  • Provide evidence that an early intervention program should be continued, modified, or terminated
  • Conduct research on language development in young children

Key Features

  • The TELD-3 is easy to administer and score.
  • Attractive color illustrations and manipulative objects help hold the child's interest.
  • Normative information is reported with respect to geographical residence, gender, race, ethnicity, education, and socioeconomic status, and is stratified by age.
  • Standard scores and percentiles are provided for subtest and composite scores. Age-equivalent scores also are reported for the subtests.

Norms

Standardized on 2,217 children representing 35 states. The test's normative population is clearly representative of the U.S. population as reported in the 1997 Statistical Abstract of the United States (U.S. Bureau of the Census, 1997). Extensive studies of test reliability support the use of the TELD-3 with individual students. Items have been screened for bias. Reliability and validity information is provided for different mainstream and minority subgroups.
